Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. How do I properly use the food waste disposer?
-
Do:
- Use a minimum cold water flow of 6 liters per minute (1.5 G.P.M.) while grinding food waste.
- Grind hard materials such as small bones and fruit pits to clean the grind chamber.
- Grind citrus, melon rinds, vegetables, and coffee grounds.
- Run water for at least 15 seconds after grinding to flush the drain line.
- Switch off or unplug the appliance before attempting to free a jammed rotor with an implement.
- Maintain a clear area underneath the disposer to ensure access to the reset button.
2. What should I avoid when using the disposer?
-
Don’t:
- Use hot water when grinding food waste, although it can be drained into the disposer between grinding periods.
- Turn off water or the disposer until grinding is complete and only the sound of the motor and running water is heard.
- Grind large amounts of eggshells or fibrous materials like corn husks and artichokes to prevent possible pipe blockage.
- Grind non-food waste of any kind.
- Use the appliance to dispose of hard materials such as glass and metal.
- Pour fats, oils, or grease down the sink as they can block your drains and the sewage system.
3. How do I clean the disposer?
-
To clean the disposer:
- Turn off the disposer and disconnect the power supply.
- Reach through the sink opening and clean the underside of the splash baffle and the inside upper lip of the grind chamber with a scouring pad.
- Place the stopper in the sink opening and fill the sink halfway with warm water.
- Mix 60 ml of baking soda with the water. Turn the disposer on and remove the stopper from the sink at the same time to wash away loose particles.
4. What should I do if the disposer jams?
-
To release a jam:
- Turn off the disposer power and water.
- Insert one end of the self-service wrench into the center hole on the bottom of the disposer. Work the wrench back and forth until it turns one full revolution. Remove the wrench.
- Reach into the disposer with tongs and remove the object(s).
- Allow the disposer motor to cool for 3-5 minutes. If the motor remains inoperative, check the service panel for tripped circuit breakers or blown fuses.
